Zao Fox Village, Miyagi prefecture, Northern Japan

I met this smiling fox at the Zao Fox Village in Miyagi prefecture. It is an amusement park where 250 foxes run free. After the bubble economy burst in the early 1990s, a former amusement park became a refuge for foxes. Most are shy but curious as you walk amongst them, but a few have been habituated to human presence and are willing to be held. Why did I travel more than 400 km to meet these foxes? Recent scientific research reveals the connection between cuteness and the process of animal domestication. Visiting the Fox Village offers the chance to meet animals occupying a unique space: squarely between domesticated and wild.
